Chagrins d'Amour. Kusaie, Est Carolines, 1940

Comments - Fantastic portrait of a lovesick beauty from the East Carolines cradling a scarlet parrot in her hands. She presses her face against the bird's feathers, lost in thought. She wears a crown of colorful, slightly tattered leaves, and a simple robe. Exotic flowers frame the scene at lower right against an aqua blue sky. One of Jacoulet's most popular subjects, Richard Miles stated that the delicate carving of the parrot's claws around the beauty's fingers is considered to be some of the best work of the carver Maeda. A classic Jacoulet shin-hanga design.
