The Great Battle of Minatogawa in Settsu, 1854

Comments - Fantastic scene of the Great Battle of Minatogawa along the shore of the Minato River in Settsu Province, between troops loyal to the exiled Emperor Go-Daigo and Ashikaga clan rebels. Kusunonoki Masashige led his men into the field at the emperor's order, knowing that his side faced superior forces and almost certain death. Badly defeated, Kusunoki and his remaining men committed ritual suicide. Here, warriors fight on horseback and on foot with spears and swords. In the center, a samurai on a dappled horse clashes spears with an enemy on a black horse. At left, a horseman gallops along with beach gripping a long iron club with both hands. Ships are anchored in the water at left, with the white sails of approaching warships massed in the distance. A lively illustration of this famous battle, nicely detailed, including fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
