Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Dreams

Comments - Intriguing image depicting dreams for some of the months of the year. In the center, the Thunder God Raijin sits on a cloud, lowering a small anchor on a rope down to a couple of figures appearing in swirling red and pink clouds arising from his chest. At center right, an acrobat laying on his back support a wooden bucket holding a plank on which another acrobat does a handstand next to a bonsai blossoming cherry tree. Above, another man swings from a trapeze hanging from a wisteria arbor. The acrobat dreams of perhaps himself as a child, playing with a large puppet of a samurai gripping a naginata. The handle of the weapon is held by the yakko-dako or man kite in a red cloud at upper left, just above a magic fox with nine tails. A full moon shines down below, its metallic silver pigment oxidized to a gray tone. A fascinating image with wonderful detail.
