Dragon Appearing in a Waterfall

Comments - Terrific illustration from a kabuki play that takes place at the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto. The evil samurai Daizen has been holding the lovely Princess Yuki against her will, trying to force her to paint a dragon on the ceiling of the Golden Pavilion. The daughter of a famous artist, Yuki refuses the task, as well as his unwanted advances. As he threatens her with his sword, a dragon appears in the rushing waterfall, the spirit of the dragon that taught Princess Yuki's father the secret of painting, coming to her aid. Daizen scowls as he looks up, gripping his sword as he stares at the apparition. He wears a striking black outer kimono patterned with a phoenix with colorful feathers. A handsome portrait.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)
