Kabuki Actors with Musicians

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Intriguing scene from a kabuki play featuring actors on stage with chanters and musicians on a platform above them. At right, a man scowls unhappily down at a beauty sitting on the ground, an umbrella in one hand and the other atop the hilt of his sword. The woman smiles up at him as she adjusts the cloth tied over her head. An interesting subject, framed by delicate cherry blossoms overhead, with a grassy slope behind the actors covering the platform.

Artist - Kiyonaga (1752 - 1815)

Image Size - 15 1/8" x 10 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few small spots, a few creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
