Samurai Fighting beneath a Cherry Tree

Comments - Terrific image of a samurai fighting off attackers beneath a blossoming cherry tree. He strikes a bold pose in the center, one hand still high in the air after having sent an enemy tumbling backwards, still gripping his naginata. At right, another enemy rushes towards him, gripping his sword over his head with both hands. White capped waves crash against the shore, and a startled flock of birds takes flight at left. The flowering tree frames a view of the night sky with a full moon peeking from behind the clouds at left. A shower of delicate pink cherry blossoms flutters through the sky, a symbol of the intransigence of life. Beautifully composed and detailed.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Small loss, a few wormholes and thinning spots, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing at edges, stain. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
