Plum Garden Moon, 1884 - Lovely design of a beauty standing on a verandah under a softly glowing full moon, playing a round Japanese lute called a gekkin. Her elegant kimono is patterned with a phoenix design, a symbol of her position, the white trim delicately embossed with a geometric pattern. Two attendants approach from the left carrying trays of food and graduated sake cups, while another beauty at right holds a lantern. Delicate blossoms and buds cover the ancient plum tree outside, the white petals rendered slightly green by the moonlight. An attractive scene from upper class life, beautifully colored and detailed, with delicate embossing in the white kimono trim.
