Comments - Fantastic illustration of the "Fudo reigen no ba" scene from the play "Toyama-zakura Tempo nikki." The Buddhist deity Fudo Myoo is threatening the young priest Yuten Shami. A halo of light around his head, the deity thrusts his sword at the man's chin, sashes tied to his arms and waist billowing out in the wind. The terrified priest clasps his hands, pleading for mercy. In a separate scene at left, a man carries a wooden signpost over his shoulder. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I as Ikuta Sumidayu, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, and Ichikawa Kodanji V. An incredible composition with large bold figures and atmospheric shading in the dark sky. A terrific Kunichika kabuki design.
