Edo, Flowers of Yoshiwara, the Courtesan Katsuragi, Fuwa Banzaemon and Nagoya Sanza, No. 6 - Beautiful portrait of the famous courtesan Katsuragi sitting on a bench, accompanied by two young attendants. A shower of delicate cherry blossom petals falls gently as she remembers her previous life as the wife of Nagoya Sanza. To avoid poverty and assist Sanza, she sold herself into prostitution, taking the name Katsuragi, but she never stopped loving him. The inset above shows Sanza fighting with Fuwa Banzaemon, who had stolen a scroll under his care. A charming, pensive image, with intricate fine line work in the delicate blind, touches of burnishing, and embossing in the flowering cherry tree at upper left.
