Series; A Contest of Magic Scenes by Toyokuni

Nakamura Shikan IV as Sutewakamaru, 1864 - Handsome image of Nakamura Shikan IV as Sutewakamaru floating on a hand scroll in the kabuki play in the play "Chigogafuchi Koi no Shiranami." He looks up with an angry glare as he pushes up the sleeve of his white kimono, which is patterned with colorful scrolls. The sleeves of his red outer robe are pushed down to the waist, and his purple pants are tucked up for easier traveling. A large wicker trunk is tied to his back with a slender rope, and the long scroll floats gracefully in the air beneath his bare feet. Nicely detailed with burnishing in the fuzzy black obi, embossing in the white areas of the kimono, and fine bokashi shading in the background.
