Couple and Mysterious Man, 1864

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a young couple watching as man holds up a stack of gold coins wrapped in paper, eyeing it with an angry expression. His face is partially hidden by the blue and white cloth tied around his head beneath his large hat. In his other hand he holds a message, a basket of crumpled paper slung over his shoulder. At left, the servant Tamaya Shinbei holds the hand of the young prostitute Mikuni Kojoro. The beauty smiles as she looks over her shoulder, the edge of her white scarf caught between her teeth. A blue plaid curtain with large writing on it hangs behind them, adding graphic impact to the design. Ichimura Kakitsu IV appears as Tamaya Shinbei and Bando Mitsugoro VI plays Mikuni Kojoro. A handsome design with large expressive figures, detailed with shading in the night sky and faint cloth embossing in the beauty's scarf.
