Five Roles of Ichimura Kakitsu IV, 1864

Comments - Handsome kabuki diptych featuring the actor Ichimura Kakitsu IV in five different roles. At lower right, he appears as the young samurai Soga Goro, wearing a voluminous black robe over a red kimono with a blue and white print through the center. His hair is parted and combed into curving wings on either side of his head, the longer locks pulled back beneath a black court cap. At lower left, he plays a young nobleman looking up over his shoulder with a wary expression, a round mirror dangling from a red cord between his teeth. He wears a blue kamishimo with a design of pinks, carnation-like flowers, which also appear on his orange and yellow kimono. He carries an umbrella and his hair is tightly wrapped into an upright topknot with a bushy end. Nice expressive figures in an interesting format.
