The Greatest Mountain in the Three Countries, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic depiction of pilgrims climbing Mt. Fuji, the sacred mountain of Japan. A stream of travelers clad in white pilgrim attire and straw hats winds around the rugged slopes of the great mountain as clouds drift across the forest on the lower slope of the peak. Along the way they pass by figures carved in the rock and under torii gates, with a temple complex at lower right. At bottom center, a group endures a sudden shower as rain slants down form a gray storm cloud. Small cartouches identify the stops along the route. The inset at upper right depicts travelers at a pool with rivulets of water running over the side of the cliff around it. A terrific, dramatic image.

Artist - Sadahide (1807 - 1873)
