Series; One Hundred Ghost Stories of China and Japan, 1865

Toki Daishiro Fighting a Demon, 1865 - Terrific scene of samurai Toki Daishiro wrestling a demon to the ground in a temple on Mt. Inohana. Daishiro was a retainer of Gamo Sadahide, who had set up an encampment on Mt. Inohana. Having heard about ghostly apparitions at a nearby old temple, Daishiro decided to investigate. Approaching the temple late at night, he peered in and saw strange phantoms cavorting. He immediately attacked and grappled with the largest ghost, killing it and freeing the temple of these horrible spirits. Here, the brave warrior forces the fierce demon to the floor, the scene a chaotic mass of flailing arms and legs. The demon's skin is red and covered with bulging muscles, his eyes yellow. Another figure leers and stretches its arms at left, while ghastly skeletons dance about in the darkness above. A fantastic early Yoshitoshi design from his first ghost series, filled with lively detail and color. Would make a great addition to a collection or a wonderful display.
