Series; A True Mirror of Chinese and Japanese Poetry
Ariwara no Narihira - Lovely image of a woman and a young boy fulling cloth on the banks of a river on a moonlit night. They kneel on a straw mat on the shore, beating the fabric with wooden mallets against a fulling block to entangle the fibers and produce a stronger cloth. Beside them a farmer carries a large basket filled with grain. Geese settle on the water for the night, with others seen in silhouette descending against the softly glowing full moon. A beautiful illustration of a verse by the ninth-century poet Ariwara no Narihira, with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky. A rare design to find in reprint.
