The Sanoki Tokaido - After the incredible success of Hiroshige’s original Hoeido Tokaido in the 1830's, Hiroshige released several other series of prints illustrating life along the Tokaido road. These included the Vertical Tokaido, Gyosho Tokaido and the present series, the Sanoki Tokaido, among others. All of Hiroshige’s Tokaido series are compelling studies of life in Japan in the 19th century along the famed Tokaido road. The present series, the Sanoki or Half-block Tokaido, is a wonderful series of prints focusing on the individual encounters with various travelers that Hiroshige had in a subsequent study trip along the road. Each print is fascinating to look at and the whole series is a delight to collectors and those who are interested in the history of 19th century Japan. Original Hiroshige Sanoki Tokaido woodblocks are rarely seen on the market, and when they can be found, they sell for hundreds of dollars.
