Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Horse Racing at Shinobazu Pond, 1885

Comments - Terrific image of the Meiji Emperor and ladies of the court attending horse races at Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park. At left, the jockeys whip their horses as they approach the grandstand, where the emperor sits wearing a military uniform adorned with medals and a sash across the chest. The women wear colorful outer robes over white kimono tucked into red pants. Fireworks explode in the sky, sending down a shower of small prized, including dolls and miniature Meiji flags. A handsome Chikanobu design, nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono and burnishing on the black uniform.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/8" + margins as shown
