Kawarazaki Gonjuro as a Fireman, 1860

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro as a fireman, shielding his eyes with his hand as he scans the skyline. He wears a blue and gray striped coat with a geometric design and a black collar over a robe and black leggings, his head swathed in a blue and gray fabric. He carries a pick or axe, and his lantern rests on the ground nearby. A cloud-like border separates the figure from large fringed matoi or standards used by fire brigades for signaling. A hand subject with bokashi shading io the background.

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/4" + left margin as shown
