Festival Dancers, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring actors as festival dancers, the men wearing blue robes with writing on them tucked into checked panels and the beauty wearing a similar kimono tied with a checked obi. Each wears an unusual headdress with animals or scenes atop it and sheer veils on the sides. The hats include a pair of rabbits, butterflies nestled among flowers, a crane and pine tree, a turtle amidst waves, and a miniature depiction of the famous Wedded Rocks with a blazing red sun behind it. A row of lanterns runs across the top of the page. The left panel includes Ichikawa Ichizo III as Shikanosuke and Ichikawa Kuzo III as Tairyo Masatomo. The center panel features Arashi Hinasuke VII as Uemura Hayato and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Katagiri Saizo. The right panel depicts Onoe Kikujuro II as Oshizu and Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Yamana Soun. A charming and amusing design with wonderful detail.
