Temple of Heaven, Peking

Comments - Handsome view of the Temple of Heaven in Peking (Beijing), China. Born in Britain, Katharine Jowett lived in China for many years. She studied with American artist Bertha Lum while Lum was in China, and became interested shin-hanga woodblock prints, although she never studied in Japan. She began selling her woodblock prints with Lum's encouragement. The American Robert O. Muller, a great collector of Japanese woodblocks, acquired several of her prints in 1940 while he was traveling in China. Jowett's prints were popular in both China and with Western audiences during the 1920s and 1930s, and she is thought to have created around twenty woodblock prints. She returned to England following WWII. Beautifully printed with layers of subtle color, this limited edition print is signed and numbered. A rarely seen design.
