Night Rain at the Hunting Ground, 1842 - 1843 - Handsome portrait of the beauty Tegoshi no Shosho during the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. The lover of Soga Goro, Shosho is waiting in a doorway to guide the samurai into the lodge where Suketsune is staying, smiling as she shades a lantern beneath her sleeve. Outside, a driving rain falls straight down against the night sky. A great image from this classic drama, and a rarely seen Kuniyoshi series.
