The Village School Scene from Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, 1850

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych depicting the Village School scene from the popular play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami." The samurai Matsuomaru had been ordered by his lord Shihei to ensure that his former master Sugawara's son, Kan Shusai, was killed at his village school. When he arrives, there are one too many desks for the number of his children, and Matsuomaru realizes that his own son, Totaro is missing. He allows his own son to be killed in place of Kan Shusai to repay a debt of gratitude to Sugawara. Matsuomaru stands at left, frowning and looking out of the corners of his eyes, carrying a black robe in his hand. In the center, his wife Chiyo has opened Totaro's desk to find the boy's white death robe and a banner reading "Lord Have Mercy upon Me." She holds it up, realizing that her son knew he would be sacrificed and went willingly and honorably to his death. The schoolteacher Genza waits at right with a sword, ready to attack the couple if they give away the substitution. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Bando Shuka I, and Ichikawa Kodanji IV. A poignant scene with expressive figures, set off by a warm yellow background with black bokashi shading at the top.
