Mirror of the Gods and Emperors of Japan, 1878

Comments - Fantastic scene of the Meiji Emperor and Empress surrounded by gods and goddesses and earlier emperors. The Emperor sits on an upholstered chair trimmed with fringe, his wife kneeling at his foot holding a poem slip. Above them, Kunitokotachi no Mikoto, a creator deity, is flanked by Injin and Yojin, two deities of Ise. At far right, Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan, grips a bow with the Yata crow sitting atop it, rays of light radiating from the bird. The crow guided Jimmu in conquering the country and taking the throne. Fascinating detail in the image showing the heavenly lineage of the Japanese Emperor. Includes embossing on the Empress's white kimono and trim, and on the feathers on the hat in the Emperor's hand.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Nice color and detail. Small losses at corners, repaired. A few light creases at edges.
