Stranded in the Ocean, 1865

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych of the young monk Tenjitsubo clinging to a rock in the ocean as white capped waves dash against him. Biting his lip, he watches as a nobleman's pleasure boat sails away, leaving him stranded on the rocks. From the boat his sweetheart returns his gaze, with a sorrowful expression at what will be their final parting. Fantastic detail in this expressive image, with a real sense of energy and motion in the water. The actor at left is Ichikawa Kodanji IV. An intriguing subject with wonderfully expressive figures and a handsomely detailed setting.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27"

Condition - Good detail. Small repair, a couple light creases, light diagonal fold in left panel.
