Scene from Sugawara denju tenarai kagami, 1850

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Sugawara denju tenarai kagami," a drama about samurai triplets who become the victims of divided loyalties. At left, Toneri Matsuomaru, one of the three brothers, frowns over his shoulder at the farmer Shiratayu, who grimaces back at him. The samurai wears a plaid kimono over a red under robe patterned with his namesake pine trees (matsu). In the center, Matsuomaru's wife Chiyo tries to intervene, throwing her hands out in alarm as she looks up at her husband. Ichikawa Danjuro VIII appears as Matsuomaru. Nice large expressive figures.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 19 1/4"

Condition - Nice detail. Horizontal and vertical centerfolds. A couple losses at corners and wormholes, repaired.
