Kabuki Actors Group Portrait, 1882

Comments - Interesting group portrait of kabuki actors with a banzuke or list of names across the top. The left panel includes Ichikawa Sadanji I and Arashi Rikan IV. The center panel features Onoe Kikugoro II as the carpenter Rokusan holding a dotted cloth over his shoulder. Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the samurai Jiraiya, looking up from a letter, and Nakamura Shikan as the sumo wrestler Akashi Shiganosuke. The right panel shows Ichikawa Udanji I as the fox Tadanobu at upper right, Ichikawa Kuzo III as Hayano Kampei, one of the 47 ronin, at bottom, and Onoe Taganojo II as the spirit of the cherry tree, Sumizone. A colorful design with expressive figures, detailed with burnishing on the black collars.
