Watch for Age of the Samurai prints each week at Fuji Arts.

Scene from Kazashi no hana shibai no sangatsu, 1836 - Lively scene from the play Kazashi no hana shibai no sangatsu" at the Nakamura Theater, a tale about the jealous senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji, who hope to discredit the younger lady-in-waiting Onoe. Here, Iwafuji has challenged Onoe to a practice fight with wooden swords, the true test of a samurai woman. Instead, Onoe's loyal maid Ohatsu at left takes Onoe's place, easily besting her opponents. The maid grins happily as she wields a weapon in each hand, while at upper right, Iwafuji watches with an angry scowl. From left, the actors are Iwai Shikaju I, Bando Mitsuemon I, and Ichikawa Danzo V. Nice expressive figures.
