Benten, circa 1847 - 1848 - Charming scene of a beauty kneeling beside a hibachi to prepare a meal, pausing to look up with a smile. At lower right, small blue and white containers rest on a lacquer tray, with a spoon atop a circular box beside it. The scroll hanging at upper right depicts Benten or Benzaiten, one of Japan's beloved Seven Lucky Gods. The title cartouche takes the form of a scroll box beside the scroll.
