The Rough Sea, 1976 - Charming image of a rice paddy with young green plants, with the blue sky and fluffy white clouds reflected on the surface of the water. A willow tree frames the scene at right. The print illustrates a haiku poem titled "The Rough Sea" by the famous 17th century poet Basho from his book "The Narrow Road to the Deep North," which features poems from Basho's journey on foot to the northeastern provinces of Honshu. The verse reads:

The rough sea -
stretching above Sado Island,
the Milky Way.
