Commoner and Fisherman at the Shore, 1857

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a commoner and a fisherman standing on the shore, both with worried expressions. At right, the fisherman throws his hands out as his side, his outer black plaid kimono pushed down to the waist, worn over a blue tie-dyed shirt and black leggings. A straw apron is wrapped around his waist, and a net hangs at his side. A sword wrapped in red brocade cloth is tucked into his obi. A large basket on the beach between the figures holds a cormorant. Foamy waves lap at the shore behind the figures, with signposts on either side. Nice expressive figures in a handsome setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 19 3/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - Nice color and detail.
