Young Lovers

Comments - Lovely Utamaro design of two young lovers caught in a quiet yet emotional moment before parting. The man crouches on his heels, smoking a pipe with a distracted expression. The beauty looks down sorrowfully, gently stretching her arms and fingers, her head bowed and weary. She wears many layers of kimono, the inner robe patterned with a delicate tie-dyed shell design. Her face is shaded with just a tinge of pink around the eyes. A beautiful image capturing the quiet resignation of the couple as they face an uncertain future.

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
