Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
The Peepshow

Series; Elegant Comparison of Little Treasures

The Peepshow - Terrific scene of a beauty entertaining two small children with a peepshow device, a box with a lens to increase the sense of three-dimensionality when viewing perspective prints. One child peers through the lens as the woman changes the print at the back of the box, here a scene of Ryogoku Bridge. The boy jostles his sister for a turn as the elegantly dressed beauty giggles behind her kimono sleeve. Notice that the box is perched atop a go board. An incredible design rarely seen in reprint form, with a beautiful color palette and fine line work in the beauty's hairstyle.
