Series; Twelve Acts of the Lantern Chushingura

The 47 Ronin, Act 6: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Hayano Kampei, 1852 - Great portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Hayano Kampei in Act 6 of the famous kabuki play about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." This print comes from an unusual Kuniyoshi series pairing large actor portraits for each act with an inset above depicting figures made from paper lanterns, a strange effect. Here, Kampei returns home after a night of hunting, having accidentally shot and killed a man he mistook for a boar in the dark. He carries his gun over his shoulder, his straw raincoat and hat hanging from the barrel, a sober expression on his face. Above, his wife Okaru leaves in a palanquin, having sold herself to a brothel to obtain the money for her father to take part in the vendetta. Beautifully composed and detailed.
