The Wakana Chapter of the Tale of Genji

Comments - Terrific scene from the "Wakana" chapter of the famous "Tale of Genji," showing the Third Princess, the wife of Prince Genji, standing on the verandah of her private quarters at top center. Three courtiers play football in the courtyard beneath blossoming cherry trees, the ball hovering in the air above them. The princess was supposed to stay hidden from view behind the fine reed blinds hanging behind her, but her curious kitten had wandered out on the verandah, and she followed the animal outside. The beauty was visible just long enough for the young Kashiwagi to see her and fall madly in love. She wears layers of kimono over long red pants, the kitten biting at the edge of the fabric trailing behind her. A charming design with a nicely detailed setting.
