Comments - Interesting scene from the play "Toyama Zakura Tenpo Nikki" at the Meijiza or Meiji Theater. In the center, Oyama Saemon looks up from a document he is reading at a prisoner bound with rope at left, glaring angrily at the captive. At right, the courtesan Wakamurasaki leans forward in alarm, holding her hands out before her. She wears a lavender kimono patterned with blossoms and ribbons and a red print obi, her hair adorned with many hairpins and combs. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Gonjuro, Ichikawa Sadanji, and Nakamura Fukusuke. The softly shaded golden yellow background focuses all attention on the large expressive figures. Nicely detailed with light embossing on the beauty's white kimono collar. The first time we've seen this design.
