Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sword Attack, 1893

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a man raising his sword above his head as he prepares to attack the fellow at lower left, who scrambles backwards in fright, throwing his hand out before him in self-defense. Behind him, a young samurai eyes him closely, his own weapon in hand. At right, a beauty recoils in alarm, cowering behind her upraised sleeve while the worried man behind her grips a wooden pole, debating whether to intervene in the fight. A blossoming cherry tree frames the night sky, and a snow marker rests at the base of the mountain at left. Nice large expressive figures. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the sword blades.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Nice color and detail. Vertical folds. Thinning spots, a few holes, repaired. Light creasing.
