Scene from Yagura Daiko Oto mo Yoshiwara, 1866

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Yagura Daiko Oto mo Yoshiwara" at the Ichimura Theater of two young sumo wrestlers confronting each other in an interior. At right, the sekitori or highest ranking wrestler Nio Jindayu angrily raises his pipe above his head as he grimaces at the young athlete across the room. At left, Asagiri, a student of the sekitori Akashi Shiganosuke, who sits on a cushion in the center, leans forward aggressively as if ready to leap to his feet. Akashi frowns as he pulls the edges of his outer kimono over his chest. A handled wooden container beside him holds a tobacco set and letters, while a kettle sits on a hibachi behind them men at left. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo III, Bando Hikosaburo V, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro. Nice expressive figures, detailed with fine line work in the hair.
