Woodblock prints captured scenes from daily life, warriors and battles, the beauties of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, kabuki, and travelers along the Tokaido and Kisokaido roads. Watch for Age of the Samurai prints each week at Fuji Arts.

Kabuki Dances by Nakamura Utaemon IV, circa 1838 - Handsome kabuki triptych featuring Nakamura Utaemon IV in three different dance roles. A shirabyoshi dancer performs in the center, raising a folding fan decorated with a blossoming plum tree above her head. The fellow at left regards her with an angry scowl, flinging his hand up in the air, his long pants trailing beneath his feet. The man at right looks up with an alarmed expression, pausing as he writes a poem slip, a brush in hand. He wears an interesting tall gray cloth headdress, and a woven hat and satchel rest on the ground behind him. A border of softly shaded clouds runs across the top. Nice expressive figures.
