The Hour of the Monkey, 1861

Series; A Yoshiwara Clock

The Hour of the Monkey, 1861 - Lovely scene of a courtesan and her two young kamuro or child apprentices out for a stroll during the Hour of the Monkey, a two-hour period corresponding to 4 pm to 6 pm. The evening promenade through the Yoshiwara was an important ritual for high-ranking courtesans. Her striking red outer kimono features a crane in flight above a turtle with a long mossy tail, the bird's wings beautifully detailed with delicate embossing. The girls are dressed in matching robes, with clusters of blue flowers atop their heads. A terrific Edo era beauty subject.
