Sasaki Moritsuna and His Troops Crossing the Inland Sea, 1865 - Incredible scene of Sasaki Moritsuna and his troops crossing the Inland Sea as they head into the Battle of Kojima under the cover of darkness. Horses swim through the choppy waves, their riders submerged up to the chest as they struggle to keep the animals' heads above the water. One man swims along, holding the halter of a black horse, leading it along. Other warriors float across on rafts made of logs lashed together. A colorful array of personal standards and banners flutter in the breeze above the scene. A fantastic panoramic view with mountains framing the water on either side. A great early Yoshitoshi triptych with wonderful detail.
