Eastern Brocades, Day and Night Compared - Designed in 1886, Chikanobu's extraordinary "Eastern Brocade" series features a fantastic range of subjects, including brave warriors, eerie ghosts, timeless beauties, and famous figures from traditional tales of triumph and treachery. These beautiful images bring the history and legends of Japan to life with colorful characters and a wonderful attention to detail. Note the appealing compositions and fine printing in these Meiji era masterworks, many of which include deluxe treatments such as burnishing, embossing, or the addition of mica. These attractive designs are a nice choice to collect or display.

Akechi Mitsuhide, No. 17 - Fantastic scene of Akechi Mitsuhide's mother attempting to defend herself against an attack by Oda Nobunaga's men. A trusted retainer of Nobunaga, Mitsuhide was stunned when his master murdered his mother. To avenge her death he attacked his former lord, setting fire to the temple where Nobunaga ended up committing suicide. Here, his mother wields a naginata as arrows fly through the air and warriors charge at each other with spears and swords. The inset shows Mitsuhide confronting Nobunaga at his palace. Detailed with embossing on the white kimono and burnishing on the armor and on the black pants and vest in the inset. A dramatic design full of energy and action. A terrific choice for a samurai enthusiast.
