Series; Select Five Elements

Metal, 1852 - Handsome scene from a Kuniyoshi series pairing scenes from the famous "Tale of Genji" with the five elements. Here, Prince Genji sits on a cushion at the edge of a verandah overlooking a peony garden filled with oversize blossoms. A beauty stands beside him, smiling as she looks up, her kimono shaded from blue to yellow with a pattern of leaves and red flowers. An ornate lantern decorated with colorful beads hangs at upper right, and rugged mountains can be seen in the distance. A lovely design, detailed with embossing on the beauty's white kimono collar and trim and burnishing on the black lacquer verandah.
