Wakana no jo, Chapter 34

Series; Ukiyo-e Comparisons of the Cloudy Chapters of Genji, 1845 - 1846

Wakana no jo, Chapter 34 - Interesting scene of Soga Juro Sukenari, the younger Soga Brother, and his friend, the strongman Kobayashi Asahina. Juro stares down at his companion with an angry frown, wearing a kimono patterned with his trademark plovers in flight. Asahina sits beside a chopping board with new herbs on it, a reference to the chapter title. He is easily recognizable by his red "monkey makeup," unusual side whiskers, and kimono patterned with cranes. Nicely detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)
