Sado Province, The Goldmines, 1853 - Terrific Hiroshige landscape print depicting the goldmines in Sado Province. While it was known the region contained gold, these mines near the Ai River weren't mined until 1600 when they became a major source of funds for the shogun. Workmen carrying baskets and picks enter the mining tunnels beneath the craggy face of the mountain. Handsome color and soft shading in this interesting design.

Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Good detail. Thinning along vertical centerfold, losses at edges, repaired.
