Scene from Asagao Monogatari, 1855

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Onoe Kikujiro II as Akizuki's daughter Miyuki in "Asagao Monogatari" at the Ichimura Theater. She fell in love with the samurai Miyuki Asojiro when his boat passed, and he gave her a poem written on a fan. Here, the beauty flings one sleeve up above her head as she looks out over the water, the wind blowing the blind hanging beside her. A koto, a lamp, and a tobacco set can be seen on the floor around her, with the end of Asojiro's boat visible at lower left. A nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - Good detail. Backed with paper. A couple creases.
