Original Kiyochika (1847 - 1915) Japanese Woodblock Print
Visit of the Empress to the Field Hospital, 1895

Comments - Terrific image of the Meiji Empress paying a visit to the field hospital in Hiroshima during the Sino-Japanese War. She wears an elegant Western dress with a bustle, a bonnet tied beneath her chin, as a lady-in-waiting leads her by the hand. An officer stands erect in greeting at left, and nurses wearing uniforms with red crosses tend to the wounded men in the ward at left. A beautifully detailed design. The first time we've seen this subject.

Artist - Kiyochika (1847 - 1915)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/8"

Condition - Excellent color and detail. Backed with paper. Light offsetting in right panel.
