Series; Signboards for Hit Plays (Atari yagura kanban-zoroi)

Signboards for Hit Plays - Toyokuni III's 1863 - 1864 series "Signboards for Hit Plays" (Atari yagura kanban-zoroi) features portraits of popular kabuki actors in current plays. Two or three expressive figures fill each page, bordered by a simulated black lacquer frame. Some designs include deluxe publishing techniques such as burnishing or embossing. Beautifully printed with fine line work in the hair. The series title is sometimes translated as "A Lineup of Top Stars" or "Smash Hits on the Kabuki Stage." We rarely see woodblocks from this series, so if they appeal to you, bid now!

Special detail - Burnishing on the black kimono and the handle of the naginata, embossing on the white areas of the kimono.

Image Size - 13" x 9" + margins as shown
