Footman Komahira Caught between Samurai, 1868

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a footman caught between two angry samurai, thrusting his sword out with one hand as he holds an umbrella over his shoulders with the other. At right, Kusunoki Masanari grimaces with rage, raising a maple branch above his head to strike at the nobleman Fukakusa no Shosho at left, who eyes him suspiciously. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho, Nakamura Komajuro, and Nakamura Shikan. Nice large expressive figures set off by a deep blue background.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 19 1/8" + margins as shown
