Otokodate Takurabune no Tsurunosuke, 1859 - Terrific kabuki portrait of the otokodate or street knight Takurabune no Tsurunosuke wearing a striking kimono with cranes on the shoulders and the takaramono or precious things, lucky objects including sacred jewels and a hat that makes the wearer invisible. The title cartouche takes the form of a book at upper right, with a text panel on an open book next to it. A bold design with beautiful embossed detail on the feathers of the cranes, burnishing in the black kimono collar, and a dusting of mica along the top of the background.
