Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Date zensei sakura no iromaku" at the Nakamura Theater, one of the many plays based on the disputed succession of the Date clan. Here, a messenger presents a petition to a nobleman, who looks up from the long letter he is reading. Several retainers kneel below the platform, the man in the center grimacing angrily, a writing set on the floor beside him. An older nobleman with gray hair sits on the platform at right, tilting his head and frowning as he listens to the messenger's plea. In the left sheet, the actors are Sawamura Chojuro V as Hosokawa Katsumoto (above), Ichikawa Kuzo II as Izutsu Gekizaemon, Onoe Shinshichi III as Yamanaka Shikanosuke and Bando Mitsuzo I as Watanabe Minbu. The center panel features Sawamura Chojuro V as Hosokawa Katsumoto (above), and Matsumoto Kinsho I as Nikki Danjo (below). The right panel includes Bando Mitsugoro IV as Yamana Hidanokami (above), Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Kurosawa Kanzo, Seki Sanjuro III as Toko? Onitsura. Wonderful detail in the setting and furnishings, including an elegant brazier and two black lacquer sword stands.
